[ Escha usually tries to talk to people after investigations. She thinks it can be good to have someone to talk to, for some people, or have someone to bounce ideas off of.
But after today's investigation she doesn't bother with any of that. She just heads straight back to her room, where she sits down in one of the kitchenette seats and pulls her knees up to her chest. And then just cries - so hard that she seems like she's having trouble breathing. ]
[ dick walks into the room more quietly than usual-- which is saying something, really-- and when he sees escha he-- freezes.
he knows what to do, theoretically. how to comfort victims (friends) when they've lost someone. but that never makes it any easier to witness escha crying in the kitchen, nor does it make it any easier knowing he can't even offer a hand in comfort without making things worse.
so what he does instead is come closer to where she is, level with her. he's quiet when he speaks: ]
Escha-- [ I'm sorry never made him feel better, never says anything much, so he just-- ] Can you try and breathe for me? In and out?
[Today is bad. Today is bad and Escha is in tears and it's a punch in the gut. He's still wet and cold but this is more important. He closes the door and follows Dick's lead. But he doesn't speak, but he moves to get her a glass of water and monitor things for a moment. ]
[ Escha tries to do what Dick says, really she does. But she just seems more anxious with the two of them near her, more conscious of her own hitched breathing and her own crying.
When she focuses on drinking the glass of water, that seems to help. When she's done taking a slow sip she's able to regulate herself better. ]
[ dick seems to notice her discomfort, but he doesn't-- want to leave her like this, so he tries to think of something to say, something to do. he rests his arms on the table and lowers his chin to it, as if making himself smaller will help with their crowding. ]
Right. [He stays on the ground but nearby, hovering just on the edge for a moment before he gets up to refill her water glass.] We've been able to figure stuff out the last couple of weeks, haven't we? Whatever happens, we'll solve it.
[ Even at a time like this, she's too polite to say that isn't comforting. It's not as if she doesn't want to find out who did it, but there's no satisfaction. It doesn't bring Logy back, and chances are they were possessed by a demon anyway.
Still, it's all she has to focus on. She nods, but looks frustrated. ]
... But this week - all week, I've been... I can't...
[ She knows that she hasn't been at her best. All week, she's felt how spacey and dazed she's been. And now it means she won't be at her best to figure out what happened to Logy. ]
[ ... it explains a few things, fixes a few discrepancies dick wrote off, but he tilts his head in thought because being a little ditzier than usual is... a bit odd? ]
[He reaches out to push Escha's hair out of the way before remembering what happens when you touch a living person, so he stalls and just gestures at her head.]
The timer ran out. Escha's still here, nothing else has changed...what else could it be?
It's bad timing, but at least it wasn't something that actually hurt you. You've still been helpful this week, Escha. And whatever slack that gives you, we'll pick it up, right? That's what we do.
["He fought back." He can't even say that confidently because he doesn't know. He nods in agreement to what Dick said and finds himself wishing he had something better to say or do to help.]
[ Escha pulls her legs close with her arms around them and presses her face against her knees. Honestly, she's had that thought already. If she's so out of it because of something she did with Logy, then...

We don't even have to say anything if you don't want us to. [He's made the choice for them. He doesn't want to leave.]

... You've been...?

[But he knows that's not what she means, and he frowns in silence. ] ...what do you think is different this week?

I've been getting distracted. Forgetting things, like what I'm doing or where I'm going. Leaving burners on, leaving doors open.
How am I supposed to figure anything out like this?

Do you remember when it started?

I think I have a guess.

Right. Just keep relying on us and we'll make it work. [...] Logy will be okay. Carlos and Polly should be taking care of him.
